The Natural World

The United States has 61 protected areas known as national parks, and over 10,000 areas designated as state parks. State parks attract over 739 million visits each year.

 

National parks include Yellowstone, Yosemite, South Dakota's Badlands, Rocky Mountains, Zion, and Arizona's Grand Canyon. The most-visited national park is the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee, with over ten million visitors.

 

State parks include Custer State Park, and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota.

The Built Environment

Cities, towns and monuments throughout the United States of America.

Two of the most well known monuments are in the Black Hills of South Dakota: Mount Rushmore National Memorial, standing at 5,675 feet, carved from ancient granite and the Crazy Horse Memorial which is in the process of being carved, paying tribute to the spirit of Crazy Horse and his people.
